Imperfect Grace: A Celebration Around the Table at Val de Vie

There are some occasions that stay with you long after the last plate has been cleared and the candles have gone out. The launch of Imperfect Grace Linen at Val de Vie was one of those evenings.

It was never simply about launching a beautiful linen collection. It was about the table, the people gathered around it, the food we shared, and the stories that unfold when we make time to sit together.

A table made for gathering

Walking into the space, the first thing that caught your eye was the beautiful, generous tablescape. Long tables stretched through the room, dressed in the new Imperfect Grace linens and layered with all the little details that make a table feel inviting.

But it was the people who brought the table to life.

Guests gathered shoulder to shoulder, strangers becoming acquainted over a glass of wine, conversations beginning across the table and laughter travelling from one end to the other. There is something wonderfully South African about a long table — there is always room for one more person.

And that was exactly the feeling we wanted to create.

A table where you don't have to be perfect. You simply have to come as you are.

Sharing The Table

For the evening, I had the enormous pleasure of sharing recipes from my cookbook, The Table.

Food was served for tasting and sharing, allowing guests to experience the recipes in the way I love food most — together.

For me, The Table has always been about much more than recipes. A recipe is the beginning of a story. It might remind you of a place you've travelled to, a person you love, a Sunday lunch, a summer evening or a table around which your family has gathered for years.

At the launch, those stories continued.

People tasted, talked, asked questions and shared their own memories around the table. And once again I was reminded why I love what I do so much.

Food has a wonderful way of bringing people together.

What does Imperfect Grace mean?

There was also a very special conversation around the name Imperfect Grace — where it came from, what it represents and why it feels so appropriate for a collection created for real tables and real life.

Because life around a table isn't always perfectly styled.

There may be a splash of wine, a sauce that drips onto the linen, a child reaching across the table, a napkin that isn't folded quite perfectly or a meal that doesn't turn out exactly as planned.

And yet, somehow, those are often the moments we remember most.

That is the beauty of imperfect grace — finding beauty in the real, the lived-in and the slightly imperfect.

And I think that is what makes a table beautiful.

Linen with a story

The collection itself added such warmth and character to the evening. Rolls and stacks of linen were beautifully displayed, allowing guests to see and feel the fabrics up close and imagine them in their own homes.

There was something very tactile about seeing all the different textures and colours together. Linen is one of those things that becomes more beautiful with time. It doesn't need to be perfect. In fact, the more it is used, washed and loved, the more character it develops.

Which made it the perfect partner for an evening centred around The Table.

A room full of people — and stories

Looking back at the photographs from the evening, what stands out to me most isn't one particular table setting or plate of food.

It's the people.

Friends embracing. Guests meeting one another. People sitting together and sharing a meal. The smiles, the conversations and those little moments that happen naturally when people are gathered around a table.

We were also incredibly fortunate to have members of the media with us on the evening, which made the launch even more special.

To later see Imperfect Grace and the launch featured in Sarie, Tuis magazine and local newspapers was such an honour. It meant that the story of the collection — and the idea of gathering around the table — could travel far beyond that one beautiful evening at Val de Vie.

More than a launch

When I think back on the launch of Imperfect Grace, I don't really think of it as a product launch.

I think of it as a celebration of gathering.

Of beautiful linen and beautiful food.

Of old friends and new friends.

Of recipes shared from The Table.

Of conversations that started over dinner and continued long after.

Of a room filled with people who believe that sitting down together still matters.

And perhaps most importantly, of the reminder that the most beautiful tables are not necessarily the perfect ones — they are the ones around which people feel welcome.

That is what The Table has always meant to me.

And that is what I hope Imperfect Grace will bring into many homes: a little beauty, a little warmth, and a reason to gather.

Because at the end of the day, it was never really about the linen.
It was always about what happens around the table.
